Thank you for getting back with me so soon. This has been very exciting. Every new piece of the puzzle takes me a little closer. This was copied from the St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery listing in Cloutierville (where my father is from). Clara B. Bell was Billie & Clara Kerry Bell's daughter. The Levy Merrell Derbonne referred to is my dad's cousin. I spoke with him yesterday and he indicated after the church burned that Madeline Jones of Natchitoches who is the daughter of Clifford C. Bell (son of Billie and brother of Clara B.) included Clara Kerry Bell's info on their family plot. I believe Madeline still lives in Natchitoches and hope to contact her soon. We plan to visit in early November and hope to meet her then as well as gather copies of some of the family records. I was there in 1991 but that is where my journey began.
Levi Merrell Derbonne was a key person for me to speak with because he & my father are double cousins. (Levi) Merrell's mother was Isabella Bell and his father was Levi John Derbonne. My father's mother was Susan (Susie) Derbonne (sister of Levi John Derbonne) and his father was William Bell (son of Billie Bell). Susan Derbonne & Levi John Derbonne's parents were Heloise Gallian Derbonne and Jean Baptiste Derbonne. Please note that Derbonne is spelled with an "o" but I have seen many references to Derbanne. I recently read the book Cane River by Lalita Tademy (Oprah Book Club) and it was very interesting but I'm not sure if there is any connection between the Jean Baptiste Derbanne mentioned as a relative of one of the main characters or not.
I'm attaching some of the info from our geneology info. I hope it is helpful. I'm still working out the bugs so some of the dates may not be accurate. It seems the Derbonnes, Bells, and Gallians occur often in our family tree. This has been wonderful for my father. He is 82 and it has triggered many stories of Uncle Moville, Uncle Septime, squirrel hunting on horseback at age 3, and life in the piney woods. His grandfather (Billie Bell) was buried at home which unfortunately now is owned by a lumber company near Bellwood (hence the name). He originally owned 1000 acres and was a rancher. When William (Willie) Bell married Susie Derbonne he moved to Cloutierville. The Derbonne's were farmers (cotton mostly). William took a job with Missouri Pacific Railroad and was gone most of the time building bridges as a crane operator. Dad (James Willard Bell) moved with his family when he was about 10 (born 5-3-1919) and they lived on the railroad in an adapted railcar that would be lifted off the tracks to sit beside the rails until the job was complete. This is what eventually brought him to DeSoto MO 4 years later (after living in many places including SW Missouri, Chester IL, Denver CO). His birth certificate is actually listed as John Bell (midwife error). He has many tales regarding the catholic church in Cloutierville and a rather unorthodox priest. Billie Bell died when he drove his Model T off a low water bridge coming into town from the piney woods. I'm told his car is still there at the bottom of the ravine (as told by the priest in Cloutierville in 1991). Susie Derbonne Bell (dad's mother) died in Poplar Bluff MO on July 15, 1941 (born July 17, 1892) and was buried in Cloutierville. When the church burned the cemetery records were destroyed and the website lists here as Josie Bell. Her grave has an iron rail around it. When we were there in 1991 I took several photos of the cemetery. Many of the dates I have were acquired by scanning and zooming in on the dates.
If you have any info on Heloise Gallien Derbonne or Jean Baptiste Derbonne, I would greatly appreciate whatever you have. Also, William Bell or Clara Kerry Bell. Please note - I have assumed Billie Bell is the William Bell you have married to Clarisse Kerry. The dates of their marriage, etc are from your records. I know that Billie Bell was Irish but I do not know when he came to Louisiana.
